Group Structure

Group Scout Leader

  • The Group Scout Leader (GSL) is Giles Puleston.
  • We also have a Deputy Group Scout Leader (DGSL), Andrew Innes.

Beavers (age 6 to 8)

  • We have one Beaver Colonies within the Group: Cherwell Beavers.
  • Cherwell Beavers meet on a Thursday evening.
  • The core age range for Beavers is 6 to 8 but there is a discretion to allow Beavers to join at 5.75 years and remain in the Colony to 8.5 years. The upper age limit is flexible for young people with special needs (with the consent of the District Commissioner).
  • The maximum recommended size for a Beaver Colony is 24, though this may be exceeded with the permission of the Group Scout Leader. Our Beaver colonies are currently limited to 40 in total between them.
  • There must always be two adults present at any Beaver activity, at least one of whom must hold a Scouting appointment.
  • The recommended minimum ratio for outdoor activities (away from the Scout Centre) and overnight events is 1:6 plus the leader in charge, with a minimum of two adults present at all times on any overnight event (save in the event of an emergency).

Cubs (age 8 to 10.5)

  • We have two Cub Packs within the Group: Mowgli and Jacala.
  • Mowgli Cubs meet on a Wednesday evening and Jacala Cubs meet on a Thursday evening.
  • The core age range for Cubs is 8 to 10. but there is a discretion to allow Cubs to join at 7.5 years and remain in the Pack to 11 years. The upper age limit is flexible for young people with special needs (with the consent of the District Commissioner).
  • The maximum recommended size for a Cub Pack is 36, though this may be exceeded with the permission of the Group Scout Leader. Our Cub Packs are currently limited to 30 per Pack.
  • There must always be two adults present at any Cub activity, at least one of whom must hold a Scouting appointment.
  • The recommended minimum ratio for outdoor activities (away from the Scout Centre) and overnight events is 1:8 plus the leader in charge, with a minimum of two adults present at all times on any overnight event (save in the event of an emergency).

Scouts (age 10.5 to 14)

  • We have two Scout Troops within the Group.
  • Sea Scouts meet on a Tuesday evening and Land Scouts meet on a Wednesday evening.
  • The core age range for Scouts is 10.5 to 14. but there is a discretion to allow Scouts to join at 10 years and remain in the Troop to 14.5 years. The upper age limit is flexible for young people with special needs (with the consent of the District Commissioner).
  • There is no maximum recommended size for a Scout Troop – this is entirely at the discretion of the leaders.
  • There must always be two adults present at any Scout activity, at least one of whom must hold a Scouting appointment.
  • The recommended minimum ratio for outdoor activities (away from the Scout Centre) and overnight events is 1:12 plus the leader in charge, with a minimum of two adults present at all times on any overnight event (save in the event of an emergency).

Explorer Scouts (age 14-18)

  • We have a partnership agreement with the Gordo Explorer Scouts.
  • Gordo Explorer Scouts meet on a Monday evening.
  • The core age range for Explorers is 14 to 18. but there is a discretion to allow Explorers to join at 13.5 years.
  • There is no maximum recommended size for an Explorer Unit – this is entirely at the discretion of the leaders.
  • There must always be two adults present at any Explorer activity, at least one of whom must hold a Scouting appointment.

Executive Committee

The Group is supported by the Executive Committee. All appointed leaders are able to attend and we also have a number of parent members. We have the following key appointments to the Executive Committee:

Quartermasters

  • The stores (camping equipment) are managed by the quartermaster, Ben Hunt.
  • All section leaders also have stores access.
